Cosplay is tonnes of fun. For a day or a weekend, you get to be a favourite character. If you’ve ever wanted to dive into the world of cosplay but have the idea you can’t because you can’t sew, rest assured that it is completely acceptable to commission your outfit.
To make it easy on you, here are five things you need to know before commissioning your cosplay outfit from Spirals Designs.
We all have our favourite characters we’d like to be. But depending on time and budget, it may be impossible to be the character of your dreams.
Before approaching Spirals Designs with your cosplay outfit choice, you should have a list of three to five choices. The reasons for this are: 1) The perfect fabric for your choice may not be on hand and it could take some time to get it; and 2) Your costume choice may be so elaborate that it could take weeks, if not months, to construct and require a lot of expensive bling or add-ons.
Finally, it is important to decide if you want your cosplay outfit to be picture perfect before commissioning your piece. The more exact the replica, the more time and money it will cost.
Cosplay outfits are not cheap. Handcrafting the perfect costume to fit your needs takes a lot of time and good-quality fabrics add up. You could be looking at 6-8 weeks before your costume is ready and looking at a cost of a few hundred dollars, at minimum.
During your initial free in-person consultation, please ask a lot of questions. Take some time before your consultation to look at different fabrics and bring photos of the character(s) you wish to cosplay. If you have specific fabrics in mind, I can discuss with you the pros and cons and there won’t be any surprises further in the process.
Once everything has been chosen, I will give you a cost for your cosplay outfit. Before I begin crafting it, a 50% deposit will be required. This deposit is required so that I can purchase the necessary fabrics and get down to work.
Communication is extremely important, especially if you expect your cosplay outfit by a certain date.
If you plan to wear your cosplay outfit to a convention, I need to know the convention dates in order to ensure we can book both fittings in, allowing plenty of time to make any adjustments.
Communication works both ways. If you need your cosplay outfit by a specific date and I know it is physically impossible to make it happen, I will let you know. This is also where it is a good idea to have more than one option when meeting for your initial consultation. Also, I will keep you up to date on the progress of your outfit before your two fittings.
During the initial in-person consultation, I will take your measurements. You don’t need to worry about finding help getting accurate measurements.
And if those measurements change during the process, no worries. Remember, you have two fittings that allow any changes to size and to the cosplay outfit’s materials.
If you do not live in the Victoria, B.C. area, there are a few differences when you order your cosplay outfit online.
The initial consultation will be done via Skype. After the online consultation, I will send you the design for your approval, along with an estimated cost. Once approved, the same deposit requirements need to be met.
Because I won’t be able to take your measurements, you will need to find someone to take them for you. I will provide you with clear instructions on how to do so.
Throughout the creative process, I will send you photos so you remain involved at each step. Once the costume is completed, I will email you a photo of the completed costume for your approval and after I receive final payment it will be shipped to you.
